How to Remove a Background in Photoshop (And the Free Alternative)

Learn how to remove backgrounds in Photoshop using 3 methods — plus a free browser-based alternative that does the same job without a subscription or software download.

How to Remove a Background in Photoshop (And the Free Alternative)

Photoshop has several tools for removing backgrounds from images — and each one works best for a different type of image. This guide covers all three main methods, when to use each one, and a free browser-based alternative that handles most background removal tasks without requiring Photoshop at all.

Method 1: Remove Background Button (Photoshop's Automatic Method)

Photoshop added a one-click Remove Background button in newer versions, found in the Properties panel when an image layer is selected.

How to use it:

  1. Open your image in Photoshop
  2. In the Layers panel, make sure your image is on a regular layer (not Background — double-click the Background layer to convert it)
  3. Open the Properties panel (Window → Properties)
  4. Click Remove Background
  5. Photoshop uses AI to detect the subject and creates a layer mask removing the background

Best for: Photos with clear subject-background separation — portraits, products on clean backdrops. Works well when there is significant colour contrast between subject and background.

Limitation: Requires Photoshop 2021 or later and a Creative Cloud subscription ($22.99/month).

Method 2: Magic Eraser Tool

The Magic Eraser works similarly to the background remover covered in this guide — it erases pixels matching a selected colour in a single click.

How to use it:

  1. Select the Magic Eraser tool from the toolbar (hidden under the Eraser tool — hold the Eraser button to see it)
  2. Set Tolerance in the options bar — 20–40 for most solid backgrounds, 50–70 for near-white edges
  3. Click on the background area you want to erase
  4. Photoshop erases all similarly-coloured pixels in one click
  5. Use Undo (Ctrl+Z) and adjust the Tolerance if too much or too little was erased
  6. Save as PNG to preserve transparency

Best for: Images with solid-colour backgrounds (white, green screen, studio grey). Fastest method for simple backgrounds.

Method 3: Select and Mask (Best Quality)

Select and Mask gives the most precise results for complex edges — hair, fur, soft shadows.

How to use it:

  1. Use Quick Selection tool to select your subject
  2. Click Select and Mask in the options bar
  3. Use the Refine Edge Brush to paint over fine detail areas (hair, fur)
  4. Set Output to: Layer Mask
  5. Click OK — Photoshop creates a precise mask removing the background

Best for: Complex subjects where the automatic Remove Background or Magic Eraser leaves ragged edges. Takes 2–5 minutes per image.

The Free Alternative — No Photoshop Required

For the most common background removal use case — an image on a solid-colour studio backdrop — you do not need Photoshop at all.

Web Asset Suite's free background remover uses the same colour-key technique as Photoshop's Magic Eraser, running entirely in your browser:

  1. Upload your JPG, PNG, or WebP
  2. Select the background colour with the colour picker
  3. Adjust the tolerance slider (30–60 for most images)
  4. Enable Refine Edges for cleaner results
  5. Download your transparent PNG at full original resolution

What it costs: Nothing. No Photoshop subscription, no Adobe account, no browser extension.

What it handles: Product photos, logos, clipart, studio portraits — any image where the background is a solid or near-solid colour. For the vast majority of everyday background removal tasks, the result is equivalent to Photoshop's Magic Eraser.

After Removing the Background — Next Steps

Regardless of which method you use, the output is a transparent PNG. If you need to reduce the file size before uploading to a website or e-commerce platform, run it through the free PNG compressor — it reduces PNG file size by 70–90% while keeping full transparency intact.
